Beyond sleep apnoea headache: The importance of sleep and psychology in high-prevalence primary headache conditions
Daniel Sullivan, PhD, DBSM, Lecturer in Clinical Psychology, Griffith University

Dr Sullivan’s presentation will discuss a series of studies on the relationship between sleep and headaches, with an emphasis on migraine and tension-type headache. The strength of various sleep factors as headache predictors will be discussed, including potential physiological and psychological mechanisms. His presentation will discuss the evidence-base for the use of psychological sleep interventions in treating headaches, and the importance of insomnia and headache as negative prognostic factors in psychotherapy.

Rest, Resilience , and Reality: A (critical) reflection on pain and sleep
Amy Hogan, Researcher and Member Support Advisor, Cerebral Palsy Society

Sleep and pain are often discussed as individual medical problems, but lived experience shows that they are deeply interconnected with wider social, structural, and emotional realities. In this presentation, Amy Hogan reflects on the complex relationships between chronic pain, fatigue, and sleep from a disability-informed perspective. Drawing from critical health psychology, disability studies, and personal narrative, she explores how societal expectations of productivity, resilience, and independence can shape — and sometimes complicate — the experience of sleep for those living with chronic pain. This talk aims to open up space for broader, more compassionate understandings of sleep, pain, and 'wellbeing' beyond clinical frameworks.

Unlocking pain relief through sleep
Dr David Klyne, NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow, Fulbright Scholar, PhD, MSc (MolBiol), DPhty, BAppSc, Centre for Innovation in Pain and Health Research (CIPHeR) “Unlocking the Pain Code”, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, The University of Queensland

Poor sleep is often experienced with acute injury, a painful flare-up of an existing condition or chronic pain. In fact, poor sleep co-occurs with chronic pain in up to 90% of cases. Contrary to the traditional view that pain interferes with sleep, emerging work suggests the opposite—poor sleep increases pain. However, there is a considerable gap in awareness and understanding of the role of sleep in pain and the potential value of sleep as a treatment target for pain. This presentation will highlight work from recent animal and human studies offering new insights into this rapidly evolving and clinically significant field. This  talk will: demonstrate the relationship between sleep and pain by presenting results from major cohort studies, reveal mechanisms by which sleep influences pain from recent pre-clinical studies, and explore the potential of sleep (e.g., CBT) interventions for improving/preventing pain by sharing new preclinical and clinical data.”
