Bench-side to bedside: translational science success stories from respiratory and sleep physicians

This webinar is aimed to inspire and disseminate understanding the importance of translational research in respiratory and sleep clinical practice.

Translational science is the step away from treatment reaching to patients. In this webinar speakers will demonstrate their own translational examples in practice where bench-side has come to the rescue in critical bed-side patients. It will also act as ground for inspiration to young physicians (or ECRs) who feel they are confined to one side of the coin, and think it is hard to trek the course of both practice and research. On the contrary, speakers will showcase having conquered both sides of the coin.

This webinar will be of interest to physicians and researchers, particularly respiratory/sleep physicians, advanced trainees and early career researchers.

Speakers and Presentations

Prof Ron Grunstein: “Sleep Medicine – clinical translation from Cinderella science to mainstream healthcare”.

Ron has been a consultant physician in sleep disorders for over 30 years and a pioneer in improving patient care in sleep medicine in Australia and internationally. He currently holds an Investigator Leadership Level 3 award from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC’s highest level research appointment).

Prof Dan Chambers: ‘Bench to bedside adventures of a lung transplant physician’.

Dan graduated from UQ in 1993 with First Class Honours and a University Medal. He completed his specialist training in the UK, before co-founding the WA lung transplant program. Dan is a Professor of Medicine at QUT and Clinical Professor, UQ. His special interests are interstitial lung disease, chronic cough, and complex lung disease. Outside medicine, he enjoys snow skiing and running.

Key takeaways

  • Translational science approaches and methods employed by each of these successful physicians in their clinical and hospital practice.
  • That bench-side experimental work is the complementary arm to successful clinical practice to save lives.
  • Clinical pearls from individual clinical cases presented by each of these speakers.
  • Understanding the importance to keep strong scientific curiosity, be updated and maintain research links to save lives at the bed-side.
