Co-design and partnering with consumers in research

Consumer involvement is increasingly recognised as a cornerstone of relevant, ethical, and high-impact health research. But what does meaningful co-design actually look like in practice?

This webinar explores how researchers can work alongside consumers to shape research that reflects community priorities and lived experience. Dr Eleni Kavaliotis, a registered psychologist and sleep researcher at Monash University, will share her experience using co-design to bridge clinical research and lived experience in the context of sleep and mental health. Dr Beck O’Hara, a digital health researcher at Flinders University, will discuss experiences gained as Project Coordinator for the EndoZone project; a co-created digital health platform for people affected by endometriosis. This session will explore how co-design can be adapted to different research contexts, with the hope of leaving attendees with practical insights, considerations, and inspiration for embedding consumer voices in their own work.

What are the 2-3 key points that the audience will take away after attending this webinar?

  • What does genuine partnership with consumers look like?
  • What are the benefits of consumer co-design in research?
Chair:

Dr Tim Smithies PhD, BSc (Hons), Melius Consulting and  Dr Jack Manners, Research Fellow, Flinders University

Speakers:
Eleni Kavaliotis, Research Fellow, Monash University

Eleni Kavaliotis is a Research Fellow in the Sleep, Cognition, and Mood Laboratory at Monash University and a registered Psychologist. Her research focuses on the intricate relationship between sleep and mental health, particularly how sleep serves as a modifiable mechanism underpinning the development, maintenance, and recovery from mental health disorders. Eleni’s aim is to bridge the gap between scientific research and community impact, helping individuals achieve better sleep and, in turn, better mental health. She is currently leading a project aiming to design and implement a digital sleep program to improve access to preventive sleep health interventions for community-dwelling people living with cognitive impairment and their care partners.

Dr Beck O’Hara, Research Fellow, Flinders university

Dr Beck O’Hara is a Research Fellow (Digital Health), with the College of Medicine and Public Health, Flinders University. Beck has worked in chronic disease, health policy and health promotion research for more than 15 years for state and local government, non-profit organisations and Universities. Her current research focuses on co-design and community engagement to develop technology solutions to support the diagnosis and management of endometriosis.
