FDSM Update
On the 8th of November 2022, at the Sleep Down Under conference in Brisbane, the inaugural FDSM examination was held. This exam comprised of 150 multiple choice questions done over a duration of 3 hours. The results of this pilot exam were outstanding and I would like to congratulate the following dentists on passing with flying colours;
- Dr Adam Teo
- Dr Keith Tong
- Dr Emma Bond
- Dr Sam Talpis
- Dr Sue Lim
- Dr Krystel Skilton
- Dr Anam Khan
- Dr Ben Abbott
- Dr Alexander McDonald
- Dr Amanda Phoon
- Dr Harry Ball
- Dr Ken Lee
- Dr Ian Maratos
- Dr Rebecca Oliver
- Dr Michelle Donegan
- Dr Derek Mahony
- Dr Stephen Tjhin
- Dr Jennifer Liu
These dentists will also have to now complete the rest of the components of the FDSM to obtain their fellowship. These include a logbook of 15 cases they have been involved in treating, 3 detailed case reports, one night's observation in a sleep laboratory and a reference from a sleep physician they work with. Once completed, besides obtaining their fellowship, they will also have their names added to an FDSM Directory on the ASA's website. The purpose of the directory is to have a central database that patients looking for a suitable dentist to help treat their sleep disorder can look up, as well as a database for sleep physicians looking for a dentist suitably trained dental sleep medicine to refer patients to. We look forward to getting this directory up and running as the first cohort of FDSM qualified dentists complete their requirements.
Congratulations also to Dr Anam Khan (2nd from left) and Dr Adam Teo (2nd from right) who were elected as ASA Dental Council co chairs at the conference. It was quite an eventful conference for you two! Also pictured Dr Alisa Geusebroek-Sue, Dr Dinukshi Daniels, Dr Andrew Giekas and Dr Rebecca Oliver.

Thank you once again to all the dentists who were so patient as we worked through all the teething problems during the exam process, this being our first year conducting this exam and all! Your hard work and perseverance has certainly paid off. Wishing you all a restful holiday break and wonderful 2023.
