Climbing the sleep ladder: How to become a future leader in research

The Australasian Sleep Association Network of Early Career Sleep Researchers in Training (NEST) is inviting you to attend the first webinar of the year. It's open to any early career researchers or clinicians (e.g., PhD students, physicians, psychologists, nurses, scientists, researchers in training) who are interested in getting tips and advice on how to get ahead in their research career.


Guest Presenters:  Dr Elise Facer-Childs, Professor Sharon Naismith and Associate Professor Sutapa Mukherjee.

Dr Elise Facer-Childs (Monash University)
Dr Elise Facer-Childs is a STEM+ Business Fellow at Monash University's Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health, and is the Director of Research and Translation at the Danny Frawley Centre for Health and Wellbeing. Since relocating to Australia in 2019, Dr Facer-Childs has established a lab group in the area of sleep, chronobiology and performance with a particular focus on individual differences and integrating with industry. She completed her Masters and PhD in the UK at the University of Birmingham and the University of Surrey. She currently works with partners in the elite sports industry including the AFL, NRL and NBL, helping elite professional athletes and teams translate research findings into tangible benefits.

 Professor Sharon Naismith (University of Sydney)

Professor Sharon Naismith is a Clinical Neuropsychologist, NHMRC Dementia Leadership Fellow and holds the Leonard P Ullman Chair in Psychology at the Charles Perkins Centre, University of Sydney. She also Heads the Healthy Brain Ageing Program at the Brain and Mind Centre, a one-of-its-kind early intervention research clinic for dementia. Prof Naismith is currently a Chief Investigator on competitive grants totalling ~$31 million. She leads the Memory Clinics initiative of the NHMRC Australian Dementia work, where she is pioneering the development of new national guidelines for Memory Clinics. She also leads as chief investigator the multidisciplinary NHMRC ‘Centre of Research Excellence to Optimise Sleep in Brain Ageing and Neurodegeneration (CogSleep CRE)'. Prof Naismith began her academic career in psychiatry examining the effects of sleep apnea and depression on cognitive functioning.

Associate Professor Sutapa Mukerjee (Flinders University)
Sutapa Mukherjee, MBBS, FRACP, PhD is a respiratory and sleep physician and Associate Professor in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Flinders University. She is a full-time clinician (public and private) who has successfully combined clinical and research work. She attended the University of Adelaide and graduated in Medicine in 1989. Her PhD was completed through the University of Western Australia in 2002. Her research interests have been diverse in nature and include lung cancer, with an emphasis on gene therapy, based in Perth. Subsequently she pursued postdoctoral work in occupational epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. She returned to Perth in 2003 and developed the Western Australian Sleep Health Study - a clinical case series of over 5,000 patients with sleep apnoea with a particular interest in genetic epidemiology. She was Clinical Lead of the Ontario Health Study based in Toronto from 2010-2014; a major population-based cohort study of over 230,000 participants. She was elected to the position of Co-chair of the Guideline Leadership Group of the National Covid-19 Clinical Evidence Taskforce in April 2020 and continues in this national role. She was elected to the position of President of the Australasian Sleep Association in October 2021.
