Sleep in women: pregnancy
6 July 2020

This webinar presents our current understanding of how sleep patterns change during pregnancy and the postpartum period; how common sleep disorders such as sleep disordered breathing and insomnia affect women and their babies; and current recommendations for managing sleep disorders in perinatal women.

In the last 10 years, a vast body of literature has emerged on the importance of sleep in pregnancy. Sleep disorders have now been linked to poor maternal and fetal outcomes such as gestational hypertension/pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm birth, and low birth weight babies. Sleep disturbances such as insomnia contribute to mental health issues for women and their partners during this period. However, it can be difficult to separate normal changes in sleep associated with the physiological changes of pregnancy from significant disorders of sleep, especially when the prevailing view is that sleep disturbances during pregnancy are normal.
