Victoria State Meeting 2024

Registrations are open for the next Victoria state meeting to be held 1:30pm-6pm on Friday 10 May. Block out the afternoon now to catch up with your local colleagues, and hear the latest from young researchers and a keynote speaker, Associate Professor Morag Young from the Baker Institute. Professor Matthew Naughton will be presenting on Medicolegal issues in sleep.

Keynote presentation:

Keeping time in the heart – a new biology for the  mineralocorticoid receptor.

Professor Morag Young heads the Cardiovascular Endocrinology laboratory at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute. She is a leading authority on the role of hormones in cardiovascular disease, with a particular focus on mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) pathophysiology. This includes the study of the heart’s circadian clock and how disrupted circadian rhythms, and activation of the MR could damage our hearts. More broadly, Morag is interested in the intersection between cardiovascular disease and endocrinology, and how cellular mechanisms lead to cardiac fibrosis and inflammation, and cardiac dysfunction (heart failure).

Her discovery research program has identified novel mechanisms of MR action in cardiovascular disease that include cell-selective pathways in macrophages, cardiomyocytes and endothelial cells. Most recently, her work has identified a highly novel interaction of the MR with the molecular clock in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease.

The intersection between sleep and forensic medicine
Professor Matthew Naughton will discuss the development of forensic medicine in Australia and examples where it has intersected with sleep medicine.
