Exploring the management of insomnia by community pharmacists – findings of the QUMISH program

This webinar will present new findings from the Quality Use of Medicines for Insomnia and Sleep Health (QUMISH) program, a recently completed Commonwealth-funded grant conducted by the Australasian Sleep Association in association with the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia.

A high prevalence of insomnia and limited access to best practice non-pharmacological treatments was the impetus for investigation of a greater role for Australian community pharmacists in the management of insomnia.

This webinar will offer insight into the perspectives of community pharmacists towards pharmacological and behavioural treatments for insomnia and offer future directions for the implementation of an expanded scope of practice for pharmacists in sleep health care, including the delivery of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia.

Speakers
Dr Janet Cheung, Senior Lecturer in Pharmacy Practice, University of Sydney
Stacey Putland, Former Project Manager - Quality Use of Medicines for Insomnia and Sleep Health (QUMISH) program, Australasian Sleep Association
Nicole Grivell, Research Fellow and Implementation Scientist; Research Associate in Sleep Health, University of Melbourne and Flinders University

What are the key points that the audience will take away after attending this webinar?

  • Community pharmacists are frequently asked to provide advice and pharmacological treatment for insomnia, but have limited options to offer customers and so despite some uncertainty by pharmacists, over the counter pharmacological treatments are often offered to customers who report symptoms of insomnia
  • Pharmacists can have a role in the deprescribing of medications for insomnia and delivery of CBTi within the primary care setting
