Paediatric sleep is a contested area. Evidence for behavioural interventions is mixed, and the widespread availability of non-regulated sleep advice can pathologise normal infant sleep and undermine family confidence. Sleep disruption is particularly prevalent in children with neurodevelopmental or medical complexity, where it intersects with disability, chronic illness, family functioning, and health service use, yet is often overlooked in standard care pathways.
This webinar, delivered by two sleep psychologists and researchers with expertise in perinatal and family sleep health, will explore practical approaches to empower and support family sleep health. It will cover assessment and evidence-informed conversations about infant sleep, considerations for medically and neurodevelopmentally complex presentations, appropriate referral pathways, the role of multidisciplinary care, and freely available sleep resources for families.
Speakers:
Dr Sumedha Verma, Founder & Clinical Psychologist, Deep Sleep Health
Dr Michelle Olaithe, Founder & Clinical Psychologist, The Sleep Psychologist
What are the 2-3 key points that the audience will take away after attending this webinar?
Family sleep disruption is not inevitable and it is treatable.
Attendees will understand that parental and family sleep problems are common but not something families should simply “push through,” and that evidence-based and empowering clinical support can make a meaningful difference when integrated into care.
Not all sleep advice is equal – context, development, and complexity matter.
Participants will learn how to have evidence-informed conversations about infant and child sleep that avoid pathologising normal behaviour, critically appraise common sleep advice, and tailor approaches for medically and neurodevelopmentally complex children.
Effective sleep support requires collaboration and clear pathways.
Attendees will leave with greater confidence in assessing sleep concerns, knowing when and where to refer, how sleep fits within multidisciplinary
